You Are My Metaphor
I made this in February when my seasonal depression was doing its absolute thang. Life is too slow in the winter; i’m left with too much time to be in my head, reliving the past, stressed about the future, facing decisions I don’t feel ready to make in the present… you know, the usual order.
Someone in my neighbourhood has a wood-burning fireplace and I came home with my hair smelling like smoke. I changed into fresh clothes and the contrast of smoke vs. the smell of laundry stuck with me. I knew it was the perfect metaphor to capture my current state.
I used to run from anything that made me uncomfortable or anxious—smoke—but over time, I’ve come to realize that the things I used to avoid are actually the things I value most now: family, relationships, even myself.
I used Tide Pods as a symbol of grounding and stability, a kind of silver lining. No matter how far you run, find the people who bring you back. The mistakes of your youth were necessary for growth. And in the literal sense, there’s just something about the smell of laundry that just feels comforting and safe.
This piece has so many layers and is literally about 1000 different things but that feels right given my state of mind at the time. So take what makes sense and leave what doesn’t idk.
This piece is multi media composed digitally and can be printed on smooth matte cardstock or textured archival paper, in a selection of different sizes.
Each print is made to order.
